Description
Issued in 1932, Ireland Scott #85–86 commemorates the 31st International Eucharistic Congress, held in Dublin from June 22–26, 1932. This landmark event drew massive international attention and affirmed Ireland’s identity as a newly independent nation with deep Catholic roots. It followed closely on the heels of the 1931 Congress-related issue and expanded the philatelic tribute to the gathering.
Both stamps feature an ornate Celtic cross design, richly decorated with interlaced knotwork inspired by early Irish Christian art. The cross is enclosed within a square frame, giving the design a strong architectural presence. The inscriptions “ÉIRE,” “INTERNATIONAL EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS,” and “MCMXXXII” (1932) appear prominently, blending Irish national symbolism with the international religious significance of the event.
The set consists of two denominations:
-
2 pence, printed in green
-
3 pence, printed in blue
The crisp engraving, balanced symmetry, and medieval-inspired ornamentation make these stamps standout examples of early Irish commemorative design. They are widely regarded as classics of Irish philately and are especially sought after by collectors of religious, Celtic, and Irish Free State issues.
This pair is offered used, bearing postal cancellations consistent with genuine circulation. Both stamps retain strong design detail, legible inscriptions, and intact perforations with normal wear appropriate to use.
