Description

Issued in 1961, Ireland Scott #157–158 commemorates John Redmond (1856–1918), a central figure in Irish parliamentary nationalism and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Redmond is best remembered for his advocacy of Home Rule and his efforts to achieve Irish self-government through constitutional means.

The design features a finely engraved profile portrait of Redmond facing right, presented in a restrained and dignified style. His name appears at the lower left of each stamp, while the simple layout and clean line engraving reflect the sober tone typical of Irish political commemoratives of this period. The two values are distinguished by color and denomination while maintaining a unified design.

With denominations of 3p and 1/3, these stamps were intended to cover a range of domestic and overseas postal rates and saw regular circulation. As widely used commemoratives, used examples are common, but well-centered copies with strong detail remain desirable for collectors of Irish political history.

This pair is offered used, showing clear cancellations with good remaining detail and intact perforations. A solid and historically meaningful set for collectors of Irish nationalism, parliamentary history, or mid-20th-century Irish commemoratives.
