Description

Issued in 1959, Ireland Scott #153–154 commemorates John Henry Newman (1801–1890) on the centenary of his conversion to Roman Catholicism. Newman was one of the most influential religious thinkers of the 19th century, a theologian, writer, and later Cardinal of the Catholic Church, whose intellectual legacy resonated strongly in Ireland.

The design features a finely engraved portrait of Newman in clerical dress, shown in three-quarter profile. The dates 1854–1959 appear at the top of the design, marking the centenary being observed. The stamps share a unified layout, distinguished by color and denomination, with crisp line engraving that gives the portraits a formal and reflective character.

With denominations of 2p and 3p, these stamps were intended for standard domestic letter rates and saw regular postal use. As religious commemoratives tied to a significant anniversary, they were widely used and collected, making sound used examples an accessible and historically interesting addition to Irish collections.

This pair is offered used, showing clear cancellations with good remaining detail and intact perforations. A solid and well-matched set for collectors of Irish commemoratives, religious history, or mid-century European issues.
