Description

Issued in 1953, Ireland Scott #145–146 commemorates Thomas Moore (1779–1852), one of Ireland’s most celebrated poets and songwriters. Moore’s lyrical works, including Irish Melodies, played a central role in shaping Irish literary identity and preserving national themes through music and verse during the 19th century.

The design features a finely engraved portrait of Moore in three-quarter profile, depicted holding a small book or manuscript. The portrait is framed by dense horizontal line engraving, giving the stamps a rich, textured appearance. The two values are distinguished by contrasting colors while maintaining a unified design, reinforcing their presentation as a matched commemorative pair.

With denominations of 2½p and 3½p, these stamps were intended for common domestic and overseas letter rates. As literary commemoratives, they appealed to both everyday postal users and collectors with interests in Irish culture and the arts.

This pair is offered unused hinged, retaining original gum with visible hinge remnants consistent with mid-century collections. A solid and attractive set for collectors of Irish literature on stamps or post-independence Irish commemoratives.
