Description

Issued in 1948, Ireland Scott #135–136 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge), an organization central to the revival and preservation of the Irish language and culture. Founded in 1893, the League played a crucial role in shaping modern Irish identity and strongly influenced the cultural and political movements that followed.

Both stamps feature a richly symbolic design centered on a female allegorical portrait, representing Ireland and the Irish language, enclosed within a laurel wreath. Behind the portrait appear figures engaged in traditional Irish life, suggesting continuity between language, culture, and the people. The dates 1898–1948 are shown along the bottom, marking the anniversary being observed, while “ÉIRE” appears prominently at the top.

The set consists of two denominations:

  • 2 pence, printed in red-violet

  • 3 pence, printed in blue

The finely engraved style, layered imagery, and balanced composition are characteristic of Irish commemoratives of the late 1940s, combining classical symbolism with nationalist themes. Language-revival issues such as this are especially significant to collectors of Irish cultural and linguistic history.

This pair is offered used, bearing postal cancellations consistent with genuine circulation. Both stamps retain strong design detail, legible inscriptions, and intact perforations with normal wear appropriate to use.
