Description
Issued in 1945, Ireland Scott #131–132 commemorates the centenary of the Young Ireland movement (1845–1945), a nationalist political and cultural movement that sought Irish self-determination and played a formative role in shaping later independence efforts. Though short-lived, Young Ireland left a lasting legacy through its emphasis on national identity, language, and political activism.
Both stamps share a bold allegorical design featuring a classical male figure, draped and idealized, symbolizing Ireland personified as a youthful, resolute nation. The figure stands confidently, holding a banner inscribed “Saoirse” (Freedom), reinforcing the movement’s core ideals. Decorative panels and geometric motifs frame the design, while Irish-language inscriptions identify the commemoration and the centenary dates 1845–1945.
The set consists of two denominations:
-
2 pence, printed in blue
-
6 pence, printed in purple
The strong symmetry, limited color palette, and clear symbolism are characteristic of Irish commemoratives of the mid-1940s, balancing artistic modernism with nationalist themes. These stamps appeal to collectors of Irish political history, independence movements, and symbolic allegorical designs.
This pair is offered used, bearing postal cancellations consistent with genuine circulation. Both stamps retain strong design detail, legible inscriptions, and intact perforations with normal wear appropriate to use.
