Description

This Ireland commemorative stamp pair, Scott #128–129, issued in 1944, celebrates the work of the Irish Manuscripts Commission (Coimisiún na Lámhscríbhinní), recognizing its role in preserving, editing, and publishing Ireland’s historical documentary heritage. The issue reflects Ireland’s continued emphasis on scholarship, cultural preservation, and the Irish language during the mid-twentieth century.

Both stamps feature a stylized figure of a medieval scribe seated at a writing desk, engaged in manuscript transcription. The figure is enclosed within a large decorative initial “C,” a visual reference to illuminated manuscripts and early Irish book art. Horizontal line shading fills the background, giving the design a rhythmic, modern graphic quality while echoing traditional manuscript ornamentation.

Irish-language inscriptions dominate the design, reinforcing the cultural mission of the Manuscripts Commission and the broader Gaelic revival movement. The two denominations are distinguished by color: the lower value printed in green and the higher value in brown, creating a harmonious but clearly differentiated pair.

Issued for regular postal use, these stamps honor Ireland’s literary and historical scholarship. These examples are offered in used condition, showing evidence of normal circulation. Used pairs are well suited to collections focusing on Irish commemoratives, manuscript art, and cultural institutions.
