Description

Issued in 1943, Ireland Scott #126–127 commemorates the centenary of the death of Sir William Rowan Hamilton (1805–1865), one of Ireland’s most important scientific figures. Hamilton was a pioneering mathematician and physicist, best known for his foundational work in quaternions, which later proved essential to modern physics and engineering.

Both stamps feature a dignified engraved portrait of Rowan Hamilton, depicted in later life with a thoughtful, scholarly expression. His name appears prominently below the portrait, while the dates 1843–1943 mark the centenary being observed. The word “ÉIRE” is placed at the top, situating the issue within Ireland’s national commemorative tradition.

The set consists of two denominations:

  • ½ penny, printed in green

  • 2½ pence, printed in red-brown

The clean portrait style and restrained color palette reflect the sober, respectful tone commonly used for Irish commemoratives honoring intellectual and cultural figures. Scientific-themed issues such as this are especially valued for highlighting Ireland’s contributions beyond political history.

This pair is offered mint never hinged (MNH), retaining full original gum with no hinge marks. Both stamps display fresh color, sharp printing, and intact perforations.
