Description

Issued in 1945, Ireland Scott #124–125 commemorates the centenary of the birth of Patrick Pearse (1879–1916), one of the central figures of the Easter Rising and a key intellectual force in Ireland’s revolutionary and cultural revival movements. Pearse was a poet, educator, and nationalist leader whose legacy bridged language, literature, and political action.

Both stamps feature a finely engraved profile portrait of Patrick Pearse, shown in formal attire with a resolute expression. The circular inscription identifies the subject and the centenary years 1879–1945, while Irish-language text appears below, reinforcing Pearse’s lifelong advocacy for the Irish language and national education. The word “ÉIRE” crowns each design, anchoring the issue within the state’s commemorative tradition.

The set consists of two denominations, differentiated by color:

  • ½ penny, printed in green

  • 2 pence, printed in red

The restrained portrait style, balanced typography, and limited color palette are characteristic of Irish commemoratives of the mid-1940s, emphasizing dignity and historical reflection over dramatic imagery.

This pair is offered unused, hinged, retaining original gum with evidence of prior hinging. Both stamps show strong color, crisp printing, and intact perforations.
