Description
Issued in 1938, Ireland Scott #101–102 commemorates the centenary of the birth of Father Theobald Mathew (1790–1856), a prominent Irish Catholic priest best known for his leadership in the temperance movement during the 19th century. Often called the “Apostle of Temperance,” Father Mathew encouraged millions in Ireland and abroad to pledge abstinence from alcohol, making him a major figure in Irish social reform history.
Both stamps feature a stylized engraved portrait of Father Mathew, shown in clerical attire and rendered in a restrained, modern illustrative style. The Irish-language inscriptions identify the subject and mark the centenary year 1838–1938, while “ÉIRE” appears prominently, reinforcing the national character of the issue. The clean composition and limited palette reflect the functional yet symbolic approach of late-1930s Irish commemoratives.
The set consists of two denominations:
-
2 pence, printed in black
-
3 pence, printed in blue
These stamps were intended for everyday postal use and circulated widely, making them familiar elements of Irish mail during the late 1930s.
This pair is offered used, bearing postal cancellations consistent with genuine circulation. Both stamps retain strong design detail, legible inscriptions, and intact perforations with normal wear appropriate to use.
