Description
Issued in 1931, Ireland Scott #84 commemorates the Eucharistic Congress held in Dublin, one of the most significant religious events in Irish history. The Congress marked Ireland’s emergence on the world stage as a predominantly Catholic nation following independence and drew hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and international visitors.
The stamp’s design features a strong, symbolic figure of an Irish laborer, shown standing confidently while carrying a long staff or banner. The imagery blends religious devotion with national identity, presenting faith as inseparable from the strength and dignity of the Irish people. The inscription “Cumann na hEaglaise” and the dates 1931–1931 appear below, with “ÉIRE” prominently displayed at the top.
Printed in blue and denominated 2 pence, the stamp was part of a short commemorative set honoring the Congress. The bold, poster-like style and simplified line work distinguish it from earlier, more ornate Irish issues, reflecting a modern visual language aligned with national pride and collective purpose.
This example is offered unused, hinged, retaining original gum with evidence of prior hinging. The stamp shows strong color, clear detail, and intact perforations.
