Issued in 1930, Ireland Scott #83 commemorates the Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme, one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects undertaken by the Irish Free State in its early years. The scheme, centered on the Ardnacrusha power station on the River Shannon, symbolized national self-sufficiency, modernization, and industrial progress following independence.

The stamp’s design depicts the Ardnacrusha hydroelectric dam, showing the power station’s spillways, turbines, and surrounding structures in a clean, architectural engraving style. The composition emphasizes scale, engineering precision, and human control over natural forces. The Irish-language inscription “Forbairt Cumhacht na Sionainne, 1930” (Development of the Power of the Shannon) appears prominently, reinforcing the project’s national significance.
