Issued in 1941, Ireland Scott #118 commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916, one of the defining events in modern Irish history. The Rising, though initially suppressed, became a powerful symbol of resistance and ultimately paved the way for Irish independence. This issue reflects the mature state’s retrospective honoring of the revolutionary generation a quarter-century later.

The design is rich in symbolism and Irish-language text. At center appears the inscription “1941 i gCuimhne Aiséirí 1916” (“1941 in memory of the Rising 1916”), set within an ornate architectural frame inspired by early Irish manuscript and stonework motifs. The layout echoes commemorative plaques and memorial tablets, reinforcing the stamp’s function as a national act of remembrance rather than simple decoration.

Printed in orange with contrasting green overprint text and denominated 2 pence, the stamp combines bold color with formal typography. The strong vertical framing and restrained palette are characteristic of Irish commemoratives of the early 1940s, balancing solemnity with clarity.
