Description

Issued in 1949, Iraq Scott #132 commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), marking Iraq’s participation in the global postal system. UPU anniversary issues were widely released by member countries to celebrate international cooperation and standardized postal communication.

The design is divided into two principal elements. At right is an engraved portrait of King Faisal II, shown as a young monarch in Western dress, reflecting the Hashemite dynasty’s modern image during the mid-20th century. At left appears the emblematic imagery associated with the UPU, including a globe encircled by symbolic elements representing worldwide postal exchange and unity.

Arabic script appears prominently at the top, identifying the issuing authority, while bilingual inscriptions below read “IRAQ POSTAGE.” The vertical inscription at left references the Universal Postal Union, 1874–1949, anchoring the design firmly to the commemorative theme. The denomination of 50 fils is clearly displayed in both Arabic and Western numerals.

Printed in violet tones, the stamp reflects the formal, engraved style typical of Iraqi commemoratives of the late 1940s. As both a monarchy portrait and an international-themed issue, it holds particular appeal for collectors of Middle Eastern postal history and UPU-related material.

This example is offered used, bearing a postal cancellation consistent with genuine circulation. The stamp retains strong detail, legible inscriptions, and intact perforations with normal wear appropriate to use.
