Description
Issued in the early 1930s, Iran Scott #C64 is an airmail stamp with overprint, produced during the consolidation of Iran’s national postal and aviation services under the Pahlavi government. Overprinted airmail issues such as this were commonly used to adapt existing stock to revised rates, routes, or administrative changes as Iran expanded its internal and international air links.
The underlying design belongs to the classic Reza Shah Pahlavi airmail series, featuring a formal engraved portrait of the Shah at left, shown in military uniform and plumed hat. At right, a bird in flight soars above a mountainous landscape, a recurring visual metaphor for aviation, speed, and modern transport. The French inscription “POSTES AÉRIENNES PERSANNES” identifies the stamp’s airmail function, consistent with international postal conventions of the period.
A bold overprint reading “Iran” is applied across the central design, distinguishing this issue from earlier printings and marking its specific postal usage. The denomination remains 5 krans, expressed in the lower frame, and the stamp is printed in red with contrasting black elements.
This example is offered used, bearing a clear cancellation consistent with genuine postal circulation. The overprint remains legible, with strong overall design detail, intact perforations, and wear appropriate to use.
