Description
Issued in 1928, Iran Scott #C36 is a classic airmail stamp from the early Pahlavi era, continuing the celebrated aviation series that paired royal authority with imagery symbolizing speed, reach, and modernization. These issues marked Iran’s growing participation in international airmail service during a transformative period in its national history.
The design is divided into two complementary panels. At left appears an engraved portrait of Reza Shah Pahlavi, shown in military uniform with decorations, reinforcing his role as the founder of the Pahlavi dynasty and the driving force behind Iran’s modernization efforts. At right, a bird in flight soars above a mountainous landscape, serving as an evocative metaphor for aviation and the conquest of distance.
The stamp bears the French inscription “POSTES AÉRIENNES PERSANNES,” identifying its airmail purpose in line with international postal conventions of the time. The denomination is expressed in krans (Krs.), and Persian script is integrated throughout the ornate border design. Compared to lower denominations in the series, this issue features a richer color palette and increased visual weight.
Printed in brown, green, and black tones and denominated 5 krans, the stamp showcases the fine engraving and balanced composition characteristic of late 1920s Iranian airmail issues, which remain highly regarded by collectors of early aviation and Middle Eastern philately.
This example is offered used, bearing postal cancellation consistent with genuine airmail circulation. The stamp retains strong detail, clear inscriptions, and intact perforations with expected wear from use.
