Description

Issued in 1950, Indonesia Scott #J12–J13 are postage due stamps produced during the early years of the Republic of Indonesia, a period marked by rapid administrative change following independence from Dutch rule. Postage due issues were used to collect insufficient postage from recipients, making them an essential but often overlooked part of everyday postal operations.

Both stamps feature a bold circular central design with large denomination numerals, surrounded by laurel wreaths and the inscription “BAYAR PORTO”, meaning “postage to be paid.” The wording “REPOEBLIK INDONESIA” reflects the transitional spelling used in official Indonesian usage during the early post-independence era. The strong typographic layout prioritizes clarity and function, consistent with the utilitarian purpose of postage due stamps.

The set includes two denominations: 75 sen (printed in blue) and 1 rupiah (printed in red). The contrasting colors and clear numerals ensured easy identification by postal clerks. Both stamps were printed by Staatsdrukkerij Wien (Vienna State Printing Works), reflecting Indonesia’s reliance on established European security printers during this formative period.

This pair is offered mint never hinged (MNH), retaining full original gum with no hinge marks. Both stamps show fresh color, crisp printing, and intact perforations, making them a desirable matched set for collectors of early Indonesian postal history.
