Issued in 1984, Indonesia Scott #540 commemorates H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto (1883–1934), one of the most influential figures in Indonesia’s early nationalist movement. A prominent political leader, writer, and educator, Tjokroaminoto is widely regarded as a formative mentor to a generation of Indonesian independence leaders during the late colonial period.

The design features a dignified portrait of Tjokroaminoto wearing traditional attire and a peci cap, rendered in a soft, illustrative style typical of late 20th-century Indonesian commemoratives. His name and life dates appear at upper left, while the inscription “REPUBLIK INDONESIA” anchors the design below. The restrained blue-violet color palette conveys respect and historical gravity, emphasizing his intellectual and political legacy.
