Description
Issued in 1947, India Scott #196 is part of the Victory commemorative series marking the Allied victory in World War II. Released during the closing period of British rule in India, the issue reflects both the end of global conflict and the final chapter of colonial-era Indian postal history.
The stamp’s design is split into two balanced panels. At right appears an engraved portrait of King George VI, shown in military uniform and crown, rendered in crisp line work typical of late British Commonwealth issues. At left, a symbolic Victory design features a vertical sword framed by laurel wreaths, with a banner inscribed “VICTORY 1945.” The composition blends royal authority with martial symbolism, emphasizing triumph and restoration following wartime sacrifice.
Printed in a deep violet tone and denominated 1½ annas, this stamp represented a higher-value denomination within the Victory set, intended for heavier or special postal rates. The formal engraving style and restrained palette reflect the dignified aesthetic favored by Indian Post Office issues of the 1940s.
This example is offered used, bearing a clear cancellation consistent with normal postal use. The design remains sharp, with intact perforations and light, even wear appropriate to circulation.
