Description

Issued in 1990, Iceland Scott #686–687 are part of Iceland’s wildlife series depicting native waterfowl species commonly found in wetlands and coastal areas. These stamps continue Iceland’s long tradition of producing high-quality, naturalistic bird issues noted for both artistic excellence and scientific accuracy.

Scott #686 illustrates the Eurasian wigeon (Anas penelope), shown swimming in calm water, with careful attention given to plumage detail and coloration. Scott #687 depicts the pink-footed goose (Anser brachyrhynchus), shown standing on land accompanied by goslings, emphasizing themes of family and seasonal migration. Both designs are rendered in a painterly yet precise style, with soft backgrounds that highlight the birds without distraction. Icelandic and Latin species names appear on each stamp, along with clear denomination markings of 21 krónur and 80 krónur respectively.

Bird issues from the late 1980s and early 1990s are especially popular among collectors for their consistency, realism, and strong connection to Iceland’s natural environment. This pair is well suited to collectors of ornithology, wildlife, and Scandinavian nature-themed stamps.

This set is offered in mint never hinged (MNH) condition, with full original gum, no hinge marks, intact perforations, and excellent overall eye appeal.
