Description

This Iceland stamp set, Scott S. 235–236, depicts a powerful sculptural scene by Icelandic artist Einar Jónsson, created in 1900. The statue portrays an outlaw returning at great personal risk to give his dead wife a proper Christian burial. He carries her body on his shoulders, accompanied by their young son and a loyal hunting dog.

The sculpture is one of the most emotionally charged works in Icelandic art, reflecting themes of exile, honor, devotion, and defiance of social judgment. It draws on Iceland’s deep literary tradition of sagas and outlaw legends, where moral duty often conflicts with the law. Jónsson’s work is known for its symbolic intensity and national romantic style, making this issue a standout example of Iceland’s cultural storytelling on postage stamps.

Issued by Iceland Post, this set forms part of Iceland’s mid-20th-century commemorative program celebrating national art and heritage.
