Description
Issued in the early 20th century, Iceland Scott #O24 is an Official stamp produced for use on government correspondence. Official issues such as this were overprinted to distinguish state mail from ordinary postal use and form a specialized and well-studied area of Icelandic philately.
The stamp is based on a standard Icelandic definitive design and bears the overprint “OPINBERT” (Official), applied vertically. The central oval frame contains the denomination 20 aurar, surrounded by ornate geometric and typographic elements typical of early Icelandic stamp design. The green color palette and compact format are characteristic of Iceland’s definitive and official issues of this era.
Iceland’s Official stamps are valued for their limited postal function and narrower circulation compared to regular issues. They appeal particularly to collectors interested in government mail, administrative history, and specialized Icelandic postal categories.
This example is offered in unused, hinged condition, with original gum present, a light hinge mark, intact perforations, and solid overall eye appeal.
