Description
Hungary Scott #C410–C415 (issued 1979) — XIII Olympic Winter Games, Lake Placid 1980 — is a six-stamp airmail set celebrating the upcoming Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Issued by Magyar Posta in advance of the Games, these bold and colorful designs highlight the artistry and athleticism of winter sports with a distinctly late-1970s graphic flair.
Each design captures a different event, combining realistic athletic figures with sweeping, multicolored motion trails that convey speed, grace, and energy. The minimalist layout and diagonal typography reflect the era’s modernist design aesthetic.
Designs in the Set:
-
40f – Ski Jumping: A skier in mid-flight against orange and red arcs.
-
60f – Pairs Figure Skating: Graceful partners gliding across the ice in synchronized form.
-
1 Ft – Downhill Skiing: A dynamic depiction of a high-speed alpine descent.
-
2 Ft – Ice Hockey: Two players in fierce competition for the puck.
-
4 Ft – Bobsled: A sleek, aerodynamic sled racing down the track.
-
6 Ft – Cross-Country Skiing: Twin athletes propelling forward through snow in green and red uniforms.
Designed by Pál Varga, the set exemplifies Hungary’s graphic innovation of the period — merging athletic realism with stylized motion graphics.
Printed in multicolor offset lithography, this mint, never hinged (MNH) issue remains one of Hungary’s most visually striking Olympic commemoratives.
