Description

Hungary Scott #C393–C399 (issued 1979) — Visions of Space Exploration — is a seven-stamp airmail set depicting imaginative futuristic spacecraft and cosmic exploration scenes. Created by Magyar Posta at the height of public fascination with science fiction, the series celebrates humanity’s boundless curiosity and ambition beyond the Solar System.

These vibrant and surreal illustrations combine 1970s futurism with fine Hungarian design, reflecting both artistic creativity and optimism for the Space Age’s next frontier.

Designs in the Set:

  • 40f – Lunar Settlement: A vision of permanent colonies and launch platforms on the Moon.

  • 60f – Asteroid Mining: Spacecraft harvesting resources from asteroids in deep space.

  • 1 Ft – Planetary Exploration Ship: A futuristic vessel conducting landfall on a distant world.

  • 2 Ft – Orbital Station: A vast spherical base orbiting an alien planet.

  • 3 Ft – Astronaut in Deep Space: A lone spacefarer performing an EVA (extravehicular activity) among satellites and cosmic debris.

  • 4 Ft – Shuttle Docking: Interstellar craft performing a complex orbital maneuver above a planet.

  • 5 Ft – Mothership Above an Alien Landscape: A colossal spacecraft cruising over a rugged extraterrestrial terrain.

Designed by Pál Varga, the set features stylized grid backgrounds suggesting space-time curvature — a unique visual motif symbolizing the intersection of art, science, and imagination.

Printed in multicolor offset lithography, these mint, never hinged (MNH) stamps are among the most collectible of Hungary’s late 1970s space-themed issues, often praised for their futuristic artistry and vibrant color palette.
