Description

Hungary Scott #C189–C190 (issued 1958) commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the First Hungarian Airmail Stamp (1918–1958). These two elegant airmail issues by Magyar Posta celebrate both aviation progress and Hungary’s philatelic heritage through finely engraved cityscapes and aircraft imagery.

Designed by József Vertel and Gyula Gál, the stamps combine historical architecture with mid-century aeronautical themes, symbolizing Hungary’s transition from tradition to modernity in both art and air travel.

Designs in the Set:

• 3 Ft Carmine – Budapest: Depicts an aircraft soaring above Heroes’ Square (Hősök tere), with the Millennium Monument and the Museum of Fine Arts below — an iconic view of the capital city.

• 5 Ft Blue – Sopron: Shows an airplane flying over the picturesque town of Sopron, with the landmark Firewatch Tower and surrounding rooftops beneath it.
