Description

Hungary Scott #B103–B107 (issued 1942) is a five-stamp semi-postal set honoring notable figures of the Hungarian Reformation and early Protestant movement. Issued under the Magyar Királyi Posta (Royal Hungarian Post), these stamps commemorate leading scholars, translators, and clergy who advanced Hungarian literature, education, and religious reform during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Designed and engraved by Sándor Légrády, the set features exquisite intaglio printing with strong linework and subtle tonal shading — hallmarks of Hungary’s classic philatelic design tradition.

Designs in the Set:

  • 6 + 3f Green – Dévai Bíró Mátyás (†1545) & Melith Juhász Péter (†1572): Early Protestant reformers and translators of religious texts into Hungarian.

  • 10 + 5f Violet – Gáspár Károli (1529–1592): Translator of the first complete Hungarian Bible (the Vizsoly Bible), a cornerstone of Hungarian language and culture.

  • 20 + 10f Rose – Albert Szenci Molnár (1574–1634): Linguist, psalm translator, and lexicographer whose works shaped early modern Hungarian literature.

  • 32 + 16f Brown – Prince Gábor Bethlen (1580–1629): Enlightened ruler of Transylvania, patron of education and Protestant causes.

  • 40 + 20f Blue – Zsuzsanna Lorántffy (1600–1660): Prominent noblewoman and advocate for women’s education, remembered for her charitable and reformist work.

A portion of the surtax on each stamp supported Protestant church and educational institutions, reinforcing the set’s theme of faith and learning.

Printed in rich hues with “MAGYAR KIR. POSTA” inscriptions, these mint, never hinged (MNH) stamps are a standout of Hungary’s wartime commemorative issues, notable for their historical depth and engraving artistry.
