Description
Hungary Scott #621–624 (issued 1948) forms a commemorative set honoring Lajos Kossuth, the great Hungarian statesman and leader of the 1848–49 War of Independence. Each design pays tribute to a defining aspect of Kossuth’s life and legacy, with strong patriotic themes and classic mid-century engraving by Magyar Királyi Posta (Royal Hungarian Post).
-
4f Brown – Kossuth’s Family: Depicts Kossuth’s parents and early influences.
-
20f Gray – Message to the People: Symbolizes Kossuth’s call to arms during the revolution.
-
30f Red – Proclaiming the Republic: Shows Kossuth addressing the Hungarian nation.
-
50f Blue-green – Portrait of Lajos Kossuth (1802–1894), based on a painting by Gyula Tóth.
This mint, never hinged (MNH) set features sharp detail, full original gum, and vivid color contrast typical of late 1940s Hungarian printwork. Issued to mark the 100th anniversary of Hungary’s 1848 Revolution, it remains one of the most historically and artistically significant series of postwar Hungarian philately.
