Description

Hungary Scott #2557–2563 (issued 1978) is a seven-stamp commemorative set celebrating the art of Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), one of the greatest masters of the Northern Renaissance. Issued by Magyar Posta, this series reproduces several of Dürer’s most iconic paintings and religious works, highlighting his mastery of composition, realism, and spiritual intensity.

The designs are printed in rich color with elegant gold-bordered frames, giving the series the look of miniature museum pieces. This issue is part of Hungary’s long tradition of honoring European fine art through philately.

Designs in the Set:

  • 40f – “Madonna and Child” (Maria a Gyermekkel) – A tender depiction of the Virgin and Child.

  • 60f – “Adoration of the Magi” (A Háromkirályok Imádása) – A richly detailed Nativity scene.

  • 1f – “Self-Portrait” (Önarckép) – Dürer’s famous 1500 self-portrait, one of the earliest examples of artist self-expression.

  • 1.50f – “Nativity of Christ” (Krisztus Születése) – A warm and intricate portrayal of the birth of Christ.

  • 2f – “Saint George” (Szent György, részlet) – Dürer’s heroic depiction of the dragon-slaying saint.

  • 4f – “Saint Eustace” (Szent Eustachius, részlet) – A detailed fragment showing the saint with hunting gear.

  • 5f – “The Four Apostles” (Négy Apostol) – Dürer’s monumental late religious painting symbolizing the unity of faith and intellect.

Designed with crisp printing and excellent color reproduction, this mint, never hinged (MNH) set exemplifies the fusion of fine art and philately. It remains one of Hungary’s most elegant tributes to Renaissance art.
