Description

Hungary Scott #2375–2381 (issued 1975) is a seven-stamp set dedicated to environmental protection (Környezetvédelem) — one of Magyar Posta’s most striking and modern-themed issues of the 1970s. Designed by Éva Zombory, the series uses bold symbolic imagery and clean graphic design to depict the dangers of pollution and the importance of ecological balance.

Each stamp features the international environmental protection emblem and powerful, often unsettling visuals illustrating the effects of industrial and environmental neglect — a reflection of early global awareness movements following the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Designs in the Set:

  • 40f – “Polluted Waters” – Two tropical fish swimming in dark contaminated currents.

  • 60f – “Poisoned Flower” – A skeletal hand placing a rose into toxic water.

  • 80f – “Oil Pollution” – A fish rising toward a deadly drop of oil.

  • 1f – “Drought and Dying Nature” – A withered plant under a scorching sun.

  • 1.20f – “Extinction” – A black bird falling from a polluted sky.

  • 5f – “Air Pollution and Health” – Diseased human lungs against an industrial backdrop.

  • 6f – “Radiation Hazard” – A skeletal hand reaching toward a red warning hand, symbolizing contamination.

Printed in vivid colors with sharp contrasts, this mint, never hinged (MNH) set is widely admired for its minimalist yet emotionally charged design — a fusion of art, science, and environmental advocacy that makes it one of Hungary’s most powerful modern thematic issues.
