Description

Hungary Scott #C220a (issued 1962) is a two-stamp se-tenant pair commemorating the First Group Space Flight, featuring Vostok 3 and Vostok 4 — the joint Soviet missions flown by cosmonauts Andrian Nikolayev and Pavel Popovich from August 11–15, 1962.

This issue reflects Hungary’s close alignment with the Soviet space program during the Space Race and captures the wonder of early manned orbital flight with bold mid-century design.

Design Details:

  • Top (1 Ft Brown and Blue): Illustrates the Vostok 3 and Vostok 4 spacecraft orbiting Earth in formation, symbolizing the first coordinated dual space mission in history.

  • Bottom (2 Ft Blue and Brown): Features portraits of Andrian Nikolayev (Vostok 3) and Pavel Popovich (Vostok 4) with a stylized rocket and orbital map between them.

Designed by Mihály Fule (top stamp) and László Németh (bottom stamp), the set combines precision lithography with the dynamic optimism of 1960s space-age art.

Issued as an airmail se-tenant pair, the stamps are often collected together in their original horizontal format. The pair’s clean typography and minimalist layout exemplify Hungarian design excellence during the Cold War era.
