Description
Hungary Scott #2402 (issued 1975) is a commemorative souvenir sheet celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Banknote Printing Works (Pénzjegynyomda), founded in 1925. The design reflects the artistry and precision of currency printing, featuring two Hungarian banknotes — a 1930s pengő note and a postwar 500 forint issue — overlain by a large, intricate burgundy security vignette bearing the letter “P.” The composition symbolizes both the craftsmanship of Hungarian engraving and the technological excellence of modern banknote production.
The inscription across the top reads “50 ÉVES A PÉNZJEGYNYOMDA” (“50 Years of the Banknote Printing Works”), with the dates 1925–1975 marking the anniversary. The sheet bears a 1 forint denomination and was designed by Zoltán Nagy, printed in multicolor offset with superb detail and fine intaglio-style pattern work.
Issued imperforate, this piece is often mistaken for a proof due to its wide margins and striking layout, but it is the officially issued souvenir sheet listed in major catalogs (Scott #2402, Michel Block 96). It remains a highlight among banknote- and engraving-themed Hungarian philatelic issues.
