Description
Hong Kong Scott #21 (issued 1871–72) is the 48-cent rose Queen Victoria definitive, part of the first keyplate series engraved by De La Rue & Co. for British Hong Kong. This striking stamp features the finely detailed left-facing profile of Queen Victoria, set within a rectangular frame bearing the inscriptions “HONG KONG” at top and the bilingual denomination “四十八仙” (“forty-eight cents”) and “香港” (“Hong Kong”) flanking the sides. The corners are adorned with Greek key motifs, a signature element of early Hong Kong issues.
This used example displays a legible cancel with good perforations and a strong impression in the rich rose shade, which replaced the earlier lilac issue (Scott #20). Issued during the early expansion of Hong Kong’s colonial postal service, it represents the growing trade and communication hub linking Asia and the British Empire. Highly collectible for its color variety, craftsmanship, and historical significance, it remains a key piece in any classic British Commonwealth or early Hong Kong collection.
