Description
Hong Kong – Scott #199 (1961) – University of Hong Kong Golden Jubilee – $1 – Unused Hinged
Issued in 1961 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the University of Hong Kong, this attractive commemorative features the university coat of arms centered against a vivid blue-to-white gradient background. The emblem prominently displays the institution’s Latin motto Sapientia et Virtus (“Wisdom and Virtue”), alongside the dates 1911–1961, marking half a century of academic life in the colony.
The upper portion of the design includes the $1 denomination, HONG KONG inscription, and the royal EIIR cypher, linking the issue to the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Chinese characters for the denomination flank the lower inscription, which reads UNIVERSITY GOLDEN JUBILEE.
This is a clean and bright stamp with strong color and solid presentation. A classic mid-century Hong Kong commemorative that appeals to collectors of Commonwealth issues, educational themes, and Hong Kong historical philately.
