Description

Hong Kong – Scott #128 (1921–37) Used

This is the 1921–37 Twenty-Five Cents Violet and Purple issue of Hong Kong (Scott #128), from the later King George V definitive series printed by De La Rue & Co. in London. This beautifully engraved stamp continues the established colonial design, featuring a finely detailed left-facing portrait of King George V within an elaborate frame that integrates both Western and Chinese inscriptions.

The central vignette is rendered in deep violet, framed by a lighter purple border, with the denomination “25 CENTS” displayed at the bottom corners. “HONG KONG” appears prominently across the top, while “香港” (Hong Kong in Chinese) is printed vertically along the sides. The intricate filigree and corner ornaments are hallmarks of De La Rue’s precision craftsmanship.

This example is used, showing a light circular postmark that leaves the king’s portrait mostly unobstructed. The colors remain strong and well-balanced, with a crisp impression and good centering — qualities that make this issue especially appealing to collectors of classic British colonial philately.

Historical Context:
This issue belongs to the final George V definitive series, which updated the watermark and shades from the earlier 1912 printings. It remained in use until shortly before the introduction of the George VI series in 1938. The 25¢ denomination was commonly used for standard letters to Europe and the British Empire, making it one of the more frequently postally used values — though well-centered, lightly canceled examples like this are increasingly sought after.
