Description
Issued in 1913, Great Britain Scott #200 is the 1s (One Shilling) bistre King George V definitive, part of the classic “Seahorse” high-value series designed by Bertram Mackennal and engraved by J.A.C. Harrison. The Seahorse issues are among the most celebrated British stamps of the 20th century, admired for their bold design, fine engraving, and symbolic imagery.
The design features a left-facing portrait of King George V surrounded by allegorical figures representing maritime power and national strength, with inscriptions reading POSTAGE & REVENUE and ONE SHILLING. Printed in bistre by surface printing, the stamp was intended for heavier inland mail, parcels, and overseas postal rates, placing it among the important working high values of the period.
Seahorse stamps are highly regarded by collectors for their artistic quality and the wide range of printings, shades, and paper varieties that exist across the series. Used examples are particularly attractive for postal history collections, as higher denominations were less commonly retained unused.
This example is offered used, with a clear cancellation, intact perforations, and sound overall condition consistent with normal circulation for a high-value definitive. A classic George V issue well suited to Great Britain collections, Seahorse specialists, or early 20th-century postal history studies.
