Description
Issued in 1962, this complete mint never hinged set (Scott #990–993) forms part of France’s ongoing Héros de la Résistance series, honoring individuals who gave their lives opposing Nazi occupation during World War II. The stamps present dignified engraved portraits framed by laurel motifs, maintaining the sober visual language established in earlier Resistance issues.
The set includes:
• Lionel Dubray (1923–1944), young resistance fighter killed at age 21
• Jacques Renouvin (1905–1944), founder of the Groupes Francs resistance units
• Mère Élisabeth (1890–1945), Catholic nun who sheltered Jews and resistance members
• Paul Gateaud (1889–1944), resistance organizer and martyr
Denominations include 0.20f (two stamps) and 0.30f (two stamps), each color-keyed while preserving the unified aesthetic of the series. The inclusion of both lay and religious figures reflects the broad social reach of the Resistance across French society.
All four stamps are offered mint never hinged, with full original gum, clean margins, sharp perforations, and fresh, unfaded color throughout. A historically significant set for collectors of France, World War II history, and Resistance-themed philately.
