Description

This France semi-postal stamp, Scott #B75, issued in 1939, was produced in support of French refugees from Spain following the Spanish Civil War. The issue reflects France’s humanitarian response to the conflict and its aftermath, combining postal function with charitable fundraising.

The design depicts an emotionally charged scene of compassion and refuge. A woman embraces a weary man, symbolizing protection, solidarity, and relief, while a group of displaced figures appears in the background, reinforcing the broader humanitarian crisis. The figures are rendered in finely engraved line work, with expressive posture and gesture conveying empathy and shared suffering.

Printed in a rose-red tone, the stamp balances strong visual impact with clarity of detail. The inscriptions identify both the postal and surtax values, with the additional charge designated for refugee aid. The prominent “Aide aux Français Rapatriés d’Espagne” text anchors the stamp’s purpose firmly in its historical context.

Issued with a 65 centime postal value plus a 60 centime surtax, the stamp was intended for regular postal use while generating funds for relief efforts. This example is offered in mint never hinged (MNH) condition, with full original gum intact. MNH copies are especially desirable to collectors of French semi-postals, humanitarian issues, and pre–World War II historical material.
