Issued in 1955 for Journée du Timbre (Stamp Day), France Scott B293 is a semi-postal celebrating the history of balloon mail (poste par ballons) in France. The design depicts a dramatic winter scene with mail being dispatched beneath a tethered balloon, recalling the famous balloon posts used during periods of siege, most notably in the Franco-Prussian War.
