Description

Issued in 1959, Ethiopia Scott #355–356 is a two-stamp commemorative set released in support of World Refugee Year (1959–1960), an international humanitarian campaign coordinated by the United Nations to aid millions of displaced people following World War II and regional conflicts. Ethiopia participated in the campaign under the leadership of Emperor Haile Selassie I, whose portrait appears on both stamps.

The designs combine landscape views of Ethiopia with the emperor’s formal portrait, linking the humanitarian theme with national identity. Scott 355 shows Aba Pres May Tcheo, a scenic highland location, while Scott 356 depicts Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. Overprinted “World Refugee Year 1959–1960” in Amharic and English, the stamps connect Ethiopia’s natural beauty with a message of global solidarity.

The set was issued in 20 centimes and 60 centimes denominations, covering domestic and international letter rates, ensuring widespread circulation.

This complete pair is offered Mint Never Hinged (MNH), with full original gum, crisp printing, and fresh color. A fine choice for collectors of United Nations themes, African history, and Haile Selassie issues.
