Description
Issued in 1960, Palestine (United Arab Republic) Scott #N73–N74 is a two-stamp semi-postal commemorative set released for World Refugee Year (1960–1961). Although printed and sold by Egypt, these stamps were issued specifically for Palestinian refugee relief and are cataloged by Scott under Palestine because the intended beneficiary was the Palestinian refugee population, not the Egyptian postal system.
The design shows a Palestinian mother and child pointing toward their homeland, with a map of Palestine visible at right. The World Refugee Year emblem appears at upper left, linking the personal tragedy of displacement with the international humanitarian campaign sponsored by the United Nations. The imagery is direct, emotional, and politically charged, making these among the most powerful refugee-themed stamps of the Cold War era.
The set was issued in 10 milliemes and 35 milliemes values, suitable for domestic and international letter rates, allowing the stamps to circulate widely while carrying their humanitarian and political message abroad.
This pair is offered Mint Never Hinged (MNH), with full original gum, sharp perforations, and fresh, unfaded color. A significant and highly collectible set for specialists in Palestinian postal history, Middle Eastern politics, and United Nations refugee issues.
