This elegant two-stamp set (Scott #278–279) was issued by the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) in 1956 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) — one of the most celebrated composers in Western music.
Each stamp features a finely engraved profile portrait of Mozart, after a classical bust, with inscriptions marking his life dates (“1756–1791”) and the nation’s name, “DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK”. The portraits are signed EIGLER, the designer/engraver.
