Description

East Germany (DDR) — Scott #100–102 (1951) — Mint Never Hinged (MNH)

This set of three beautifully engraved stamps (Scott #100–102) was issued by the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) in 1951, honoring three great composers who shaped German and European classical music:

  • 6 Pfennig – George Frideric Handel (G. Friedrich Händel) — celebrated Baroque composer known for Messiah and Water Music.

  • 8 Pfennig – Albert Lortzing — German Romantic composer and librettist famed for his comic operas such as Zar und Zimmermann.

  • 50 Pfennig – Carl Maria von Weber (C. M. von Weber) — influential early Romantic composer best known for Der Freischütz.

Each design features a finely detailed portrait framed by a delicate ornamental border, with inscriptions reading “Deutsche Demokratische Republik”, reflecting the new identity of East Germany during its formative postwar years.

Issued: 1951
Designer/Printer: State Printing Works, Berlin

Denominations: 6 Pf, 8 Pf, 50 Pf
Historical Note: Issued in the early cultural revival period of the DDR, these stamps emphasized the socialist state’s reverence for classical heritage and its claim to German cultural continuity.
