Description
Djibouti – Scott #493–495 (1979) – Sir Rowland Hill: Centenary of the Postal Stamp – Mint Never Hinged
This attractive three-stamp commemorative set was issued by the Republic of Djibouti in 1979 to mark the 100th anniversary of Sir Rowland Hill’s death and to honor his pivotal role in the creation of the modern postage stamp. Sir Rowland Hill’s reforms revolutionized communication worldwide by introducing prepaid, uniform postal rates and the concept of the adhesive postage stamp, first appearing as the Penny Black in 1840.
Each stamp in this set highlights different aspects of Hill’s legacy:
-
25f – Portrait of Sir Rowland Hill alongside postal clerks at work and an early Djibouti stamp.
-
100f – A collage of world postage stamps illustrating the global reach of Hill’s innovation.
-
150f – Portrait with a depiction of early maritime mail transport, symbolizing the spread of global communication.
Vivid colors, strong graphic layouts, and crisp inscriptions make this a visually compelling tribute to one of postal history’s most important figures.
Mint Never Hinged (MNH) – clean gum, no faults.
A meaningful and historically significant addition to any postal history, topical, or Djibouti collection.
