Denmark – Scott #s B49-52

Description

This Denmark semi-postal commemorative stamp set, Scott #B49–B52, issued in 1976, celebrates historic ships associated with Danish–American connections and maritime heritage. As semi-postal issues, each stamp includes a surcharge designated for charitable causes, reflecting Denmark’s longstanding tradition of linking postage with public benefit.

The designs depict a range of historically significant vessels, from early seafaring ships to later steam-powered and multi-masted sailing vessels, illustrating the evolution of transatlantic travel and trade. Each stamp presents a distinct ship in motion at sea, emphasizing Denmark’s deep cultural ties to maritime history and its role in exploration, migration, and international exchange.

Printed in finely detailed line engraving, the stamps combine crisp nautical imagery with strong, balanced compositions. The inscriptions “Danmark” and “Danmark–Amerika” are integrated into the designs, reinforcing the theme of transatlantic connection. Varied color schemes distinguish each denomination while maintaining a cohesive visual identity across the set.

Issued in denominations of 70ø+20ø, 90ø+20ø, 100ø+20ø, and 130ø+20ø, the stamps were intended for higher-rate postal use, with the surcharge supporting charitable initiatives. This complete set is offered mint never hinged (MNH), with fresh color, intact perforations, and pristine original gum. MNH examples are especially sought after by collectors of Denmark semi-postals, ship and maritime themes, and European commemorative issues.
