Description

This is a used set of Denmark Scott #264–266, issued in 1938 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Bertel Thorvaldsen, Denmark’s world-renowned neoclassical sculptor. These beautifully engraved stamps highlight both the artist himself and some of his most iconic works.

Set includes:

  • 5 øre (Scott 264) – Portrait of Thorvaldsen seated, in deep carmine.

  • 10 øre (Scott 265)Jason with the Golden Fleece, one of Thorvaldsen’s most celebrated sculptures, in violet.

  • 30 øre (Scott 266) – Thorvaldsen portrait (blue), echoing the composition of the 5-øre but in a higher denomination and more detailed engraving.

All stamps show clean circular date cancels, strong color, and sound perforations. The fine detail of the engravings—particularly Jason’s classical figure and the sculptor’s cloak—is characteristic of Denmark’s high-quality commemoratives of the 1930s.

An ideal set for collectors of art-on-stamps, Scandinavian history, or neoclassical sculpture.
