Description
Denmark – 1996 Europa “Famous Women” Stamps: Karen Blixen & Asta Nielsen (Scott 1050–1051), Used
This used pair from Denmark, issued in 1996 and cataloged as Scott 1050–1051, was released as part of the annual Europa theme honoring Famous Women. Denmark selected two internationally influential cultural figures and presented them through modern, graphic portraiture rather than traditional engraved likeness.
-
Scott 1050 (3.75 kr) honors Karen Blixen (1885–1962), the celebrated Danish author best known internationally for Out of Africa, published under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Blixen’s work spans memoir, fiction, and Gothic storytelling, and she remains one of Denmark’s most enduring literary figures. The stamp’s earth-toned, abstract design evokes legacy and narrative depth rather than literal portraiture, reflecting her lasting cultural presence.

Scott 1051 (5.00 kr) commemorates Asta Nielsen (1881–1972), a pioneering actress of the silent film era and one of Europe’s first international movie stars. Renowned for her expressive, naturalistic acting style, Nielsen helped redefine screen performance in the 1910s and 1920s. The cool blue-gray portrait emphasizes mood and character, echoing the emotional intensity of her film roles.
Both stamps were designed by Austin Grandjean, whose minimalist approach favors form, tone, and emotional suggestion over photographic realism, aligning with late-20th-century Scandinavian graphic design traditions.
The stamps are postally used, each bearing visible cancellations that do not significantly detract from the central imagery. Colors remain clear, perforations are intact, and overall condition is clean and attractive for used examples.
An excellent thematic pair for collectors of Denmark, Europa issues, women on stamps, literature and film history, or modern European design.
