Description
This is Denmark Scott #56, the classic 1895–1901 provisional surcharge on the 24-øre brown Arms-Type definitive. The stamp features a bold black overprint changing the original denomination to 15 øre, with the numerals “15 15” struck across the central oval and “ØRE” added below.
These provisional surcharges were issued to meet new postal rate requirements, and the strong typography of the overprint contrasts dramatically with the ornate engraved Arms design—one of Denmark’s most recognizable early definitive motifs, featuring the crowned national coat of arms.
This example is Mint Never Hinged, an especially desirable condition for this era, as many surviving examples are hinged or show overprint smudging or uneven strikes. Color, centering, perforations, and gum are all clean and fresh.
Ideal for collectors of classic Denmark, surcharged issues, Scandinavian philately, and 19th-century European definitives.
