Description
Denmark Scott #184 (1927) is a provisional surcharge created during a period of shifting postal rates. For this issue, the Danish Post Office applied a bold black “12 / 12” surcharge to revalue the earlier 25 øre violet King Christian X definitive. The heavy, double “12” overprint is one of the most recognizable features of the 1927 provisional series, often showing slight variations in spacing and alignment typical of the era’s surcharge work.
The underlying engraved design features a finely detailed profile portrait of King Christian X set within an ornate oval frame, surrounded by laurel branches and crowned monograms (“CX”). The vivid violet background contrasts sharply with the deep black surcharge, resulting in a visually striking provisional stamp.
This used example shows a readable circular cancel that does not obscure the surcharge, leaving both the portrait and overprint clearly visible. Perforations, color, and impression remain consistent with normal postal use. A strong addition to any collection of Danish provisional surcharges or early 20th-century portrait definitives.
