Description
Denmark Scott #177 (1927) is a striking provisional surcharge created during a period of postal-rate adjustments. For this issue, the Danish Post Office applied a bold “20 ØRE” surcharge in black to the earlier 30 øre blue King Christian X definitive. The strong contrast between the blue portrait and the heavy black overprint makes this one of the most visually distinctive Danish provisionals of the era.
The underlying design features a finely engraved profile of King Christian X within an oval frame surrounded by laurel branches, crowned monograms (“CX”), and the country name across the top. The provisional “20/ØRE” surcharge was applied over the lower portion of the stamp, often resulting in small variations in placement—typical of hand-set or semi-mechanical overprint work from the period.
This used example shows a crisp circular cancel that remains readable while leaving the portrait and overprint fully visible. The color, perforations, and impression are consistent with normal postal use. A desirable item for collectors specializing in Danish surcharges, provisional issues, or the portrait definitives of King Christian X.
