Description

Denmark Scott #165 (1927) commemorates the 300th anniversary of the birth of King Christian IV, one of Denmark’s most historically significant monarchs. The design, printed in green, features an engraved portrait of Christian IV in his characteristic 17th-century attire, complete with stylized beard and ruff collar.

The frame is richly detailed with vertical inscriptions “1624” and “1924” marking the tricentennial being honored, though the stamp itself was released in 1927 as part of the extended definitive/commemorative series. Crown emblems appear at the upper left and right, balancing the bold corner numerals “10 ØRE 10.”

Used examples frequently show light to moderate cancels, as this issue remained in regular postal circulation. The cancel on this stamp is unobtrusive, leaving the portrait and inscriptions fully visible. The crisp engraving and distinctive historic subject make this issue a favorite among collectors of Danish monarchy and classic engraved portrait stamps.
